Do’s and Don’ts of Military Care Packages for Soldiers

Sending a care package to your loved one deployed overseas seems so easy, doesn’t it? You just box up some cookies, attach a sweet card, and it’s ready to go, right? If only it were that easy. Sending mail to ships/units overseas is tricky for many reasons (slow processing, mail limitations, etc.) but one of the most confounding is this: unless you’ve been deployed yourself, it’s hard to know exactly what a Soldier or Sailor might want. After two deployments (and a picky husband), here’s what I’ve learned about military care packages. Try Not to Embarrass: You might think sending a life-size portrait of your toy poodle dressed in a ballet skirt is hilarious, but chances are your husband won’t …

Do Not Call Registry is Just the 1st Step

The Federal Trade Commission launched it’s much anticipated “Do Not Call Registry” on June 27th, several days earlier than the announced July 1 debut. The FTC reported that they were receiving as many as 1,000 registrations a minute at their website, www.donotcall.gov. As of Tuesday, July 1, 12.5 million telephone numbers had been logged into the registry, according to the FTC. The “do not call” registry takes effect on Oct. 1 and telemarketers who call numbers on the list could face fines up to $11,000 per call. While consumers may consider the registry a victory over annoying telemarketing calls, those same telemarketers have already begun to focus on other ways to reach the consumer via e-mail and direct mail marketing. …

DNA Testing – Are You Raising Someone Else’s Child?

Paternity Testing – Are you raising someone else’s child? Back in the 1700s, the best way to determine paternity was by a good hard look at the child, followed by a good hard look at the father. Enough coincidences and maybe a relationship could be proposed. A hundred years later, eye colour was discovered to be a paternity identifier. This theory has had its flaws exposed because of recent DNA advances. We now know that eye colour is determined by at least six alleles, or genetic markers. Paternity testing has become a lot easier and affordable over the past few years due to advances in DNA science. Although an estimated 200,000 DNA tests are conducted each year by states needing …

DNA Paternity Testing – 5 Key Questions You Should Ask Your DNA Testing Provider

DNA paternity testing in its purest form is the application of DNA technology to provide information about the parentage of an individual (usually a child). The mother of the child is rarely disputed, and most of the time DNA testing is requested to inform the likely father of a child. DNA is inherited from our parents, with half coming from the mother, and the other half from the father. This pattern of inheritance allows the opportunity where the mother of the child is not disputed, to produce a putative DNA profile of the biological father. The process is relatively simple in that the final DNA profile of the child is composed of a series of bands which can only come …

The next time you are watching your favorite CSI TV show or a particular movie and stumble into the fascinating world of DNA, you might be surprised to know that our DNA can do more than identify a suspect or victim at a crime scene. DNA Genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level of genetic relationship between two individuals (Genealogical 2005). DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, is used in the process because of its unique nature and the fact that it is passed down from one generation to …

Divorced Parent: Do You Alienate Your Child from the Other Parent?

I have seen some divorce parents consciously distance their children from the other parent? Such actions may only be justified when there is a genuine concern about the children’s emotional or physical safety when with the other parent. But in the absence of past domestic violence, drug or alcohol abuse, physical, sexual, or emotional child abuse, alienating children from the other parent will never bring any good. Other parents may subconsciously alienate children from the other parent. But whether there is a deliberate move or not to alienate children from the other parent, the same thing will happen. Children will always suffer. Remember children generally fare best when they have the emotional support and ongoing involvement of both parents and …

Disposal and First Satellites

Depending on the mission of a satellite, it will eventually be no longer useful. Some satellites end their useful life when falling out of orbit and burning up in the atmosphere. Others continue to orbit the earth long after the mission has ended. Depending on the altitude of the orbit, a satellite will either stay in orbit or fall back to earth. Below 1000 km (620 miles) satellites experience friction from the atmosphere which slows them down and because of that the altitude of the orbit decreases until eventually the satellite falls out of orbit and plunges back to earth where it burns up in the atmosphere. DirecTV and DISH Network Merger

It was in October 2001 that General Motors Hughes (Parent company of Direct TV) and EchoStar Communications Corp., trader of Dish Network agreed to a merger. The new company would have improved the services for satellite TV clients by adding many HDTV channels and local channels would then be available to all satellite TV viewers. However, the US Department of Justice blocked the merger. Why did they do that? The merger would create a monopoly position When merged the new company would serve all of the United States without any competition. As we all know, competition spurs progress and a merger would basically result in less progress. At the present time about 25 to 35 million homes do not have …
